What to See in Aberdeen and the Northeast

Balmoral Castle. Open to the public from April through July 31st each year, the Queen is in residence each August.

Slains Castle. The castle that inspired Castle Dracula, Slains Castle was erected in 1597 by the 9th Earl of Erroll. King James VI had it destroyed in retaliation of Erroll's participation in a revolt. Located north of Cruden Bay right on the coast.

Baxters. Located in the town of Fochabers, Baxters is the famous maker of jellies and soups and is a fine place for lunch.

Elgin Cathedral. The superb ruin of what was perhaps Scotland's most beautiful cathedral. Founded in 1224, it was burned in 1390 by the Wolf of Badenoch. If you are into history, this is a must.

Brodie Castle. Five miles west of Forres, this castle is known for its ornate corbelled battlements and bartizans. If you look closely, you might see the cannon drain spouts and a sun dial built into the side of the keep.

Cashmere Visitor Centre. Near the Elgin Cathedral, this is a great place to buy a cashmere sweater.
