Golf in Aberdeen and the Northeast
Royal Aberdeen. Old, well-established golf club
presenting a true test of seaside links golf. Set among
wonderful sand dunes by the sea, the wind is often a
factor.
Murcar. Right next to Royal Aberdeen, this course is one of Scotland's Top 20. This is a typical links course with bracing sea breezes. Stonehaven. South of Aberdeen, this is another hidden gem. Inland course situated partially on cliff tops with outstanding views. Cruden Bay. If you can play only one course in the Northeast, this is the one! A fabulous, fun course with stunning colors and beautiful views. One of the best courses in Scotland, Cruden Bay presents a real challenge for the serious golfer whereas the holiday player will appreciate the magnificent views over the bay to Slains Castle. Lossiemouth. North of Elgin on the north coast, this is another seaside links course. Off the beaten path, but worth playing. |
Royal Aberdeen is the 6th oldest golf club in the world dating to 1783 when the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen was founded. In 1903, King Edward VII bestowed the royal title, and it has been the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club ever since. Royal Aberdeen's Balgownie Links have all of the ingredients to make this one of the most challenging rounds you will play in Scotland. You will be forced to negotiate towering sand hills, tumbling fairways, punishing sandpits, a few blind shots, trees on top of sand dunes, narrow fairways that thread through high dunes, greens on plateaus, greens down in hollows and forced carries over areas filled with gorse and heather. Number 18 could well be the best finishing hole in Scotland. Truly, only Carnoustie, Loch Lomond, Muirfield and the Carnegie Course at Skibo Castle have finishing holes to match Royal Aberdeen. The tee shot must be accurate as bunkers and gorse await the slight miss-hit. The long 2nd shot must carry a deep swale to an elevated green, nearly impossible against the wind. It is said that Royal Aberdeen would be a British Open Venue if it were just 500 yards longer, but at 6372 yards, it offers plenty of challenge. |
