Where to Stay in the Highlands

Ballachulish House. Drink your whiskey beside a log fire in the Drawing Room. Look out the windows at fabulous views of Loch Linnhe. Rebuilt after the Jacobite Rebellion, the house has many historic associations. The rooms are filled with antiques.

Culduthel Lodge. A small privately run lodge overlooking the River Ness, this is a small but elegant Georgian residence of architectural interest. In fine weather, aperitifs are enjoyed on the garden terrace. In cooler months, the drawing room beckons with crackling log fires. The dining room provides an inviting setting in which to enjoy a daily changing menu of imaginative cooking with good wines. Great seafood.

Culloden House. A fine manor house hotel built on former site of historic Renaissance castle just outside Inverness near the Culloden Battlefield. Occupied by the Jacobite army in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie used the house as his headquarters prior to his fateful battle on Culloden Moor. Today you can relax and dine surrounded by rich, soft furnishings, sparkling chandeliers and beautiful Adam fireplaces. Each bedroom is different, many with four poster beds. A Taste of Scotland award winner. A Scotland Heritage Hotel.

Royal Golf Hotel. Previously a family mansion, two things set this hotel apart from all others. It sits off the first tee of Royal Dornoch. It has great food. A Taste of Scotland award winner.
