What to See in Dublin and the South

Dublin. See Trinity College, well known for its 9th century Book of Kells. St. Patrick's Cathedral and historic Phoenix Park are also worth seeing. Be sure to drop into one of the lively Dublin pubs for a drop of Guinness.

Kilkenny. This medieval city between Dublin and Waterford is dominated by its Norman Castle and ancient Cathedral.

Waterford. This is the home of the famous crystal, and the shops selling it are definitely worth a visit.

Kilkenny Castle
Kilkenny Castle

One of the most instantly recognized buildings in Ireland, Kilkenny Castle has been an important site since Strongbow constructed the first building in the 12th century.

William the Earl Marshall built the first stone castle on the site in 1260. The Butler family bought the Castle in 1391 and lived there continuously until 1935. The Castle and grounds were given to the Nation in 1967.
